Sara Errani enjoyed a breakout year in 2008, winning her first two WTA titles in consecutive weeks at Palermo and Portoroz. She reached the finals at both events the following year, but failed to defend. The Italian clay-courter represented her country in the 2008 Olympics and was a member of two Italian Fed Cup championship squads in 2009 and 2010. Errani was a 2011 Pattaya City finalist. In March 2012, Errani became the first woman in nearly two years to sweep singles and doubles titles at the same event. She beat top-seeded Roberta Vinci in the semifinals then topped Flavia Pennetta in the final to win the Acapulco singles title. Errani partnered Vinci to collect the Acapulco doubles title. Errani completed the double title sweep in Barcelona in April, beating Dominika Cibulkova in the singles final and partnering Vinci to win doubles. She is the first woman to pull off the singles-doubles sweep at two tournament since Serena Williams did it in 2009. The No. 21-seeded Italian reached both the singles and doubles finals of the French Open. Errani beat three former Grand Slam champions to reach the singles final, falling to Maria Sharapova. Errani, who won the French Open doubles title with Roberta Vinci, won four singles titles and eight doubles titles in 2012; she attained the world No. 1 ranking in doubles on September 10, 2012. In January, 2013, Errani won her third Grand Slam doubles title with Vinci at the Australian Open.
