Sania Mirza Bio
The most successful female Indian tennis player in history, Sania Mirza is one of the most popular players in the world. A ferocious forehand is the foundation of Mirza's aggressive, power-based baseline style. Sania became the first Indian to win a WTA title when she returned to the city where she was raised to capture the 2005 Hyderabad championship. An accomplished doubles player, Mirza has won 12 WTA doubles titles, including the 2011 Indian Wells and Charleston championships. The pair also reached the Roland Garros finals. She partnered Mahesh Bhupathi to claim the 2009 Australian Open mixed doubles title to become the first Indian woman to win a major title. Mirza was criticized by some Muslim groups for wearing on-court apparel they deemed too revealing. In the aftermath of the criticism, local authorities provided security to protect her. In February, 2008, she announced she would not play tournaments in her home country due to the controversy. Two years later, she played the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Mirza married Pakistani cricket star Shoaib Malik on April 12, 2010 in Hyderabad.
