Robin Soderling pulled off one of tennis’ biggest upsets in 2009 when he handed Rafael Nadal his first loss at Roland Garros, snapping the Spaniard's 31-match winning streak at the Paris major. It remains Nadal's lone loss in a best-of-five set match on clay. Soderling beat the four-time defending champion en route to his first Grand Slam final, where he lost to Roger Federer. A year later, at the 2010 French Open, he upset Federer in the quarterfinals, ending Federer's record run of 23 straight Grand Slam semifinal appearances, only to lose in the final to Nadal. Soderling reached the Top 10 for the first time in 2009. In 2010, the Swede became the first man from his nation to finish in the Top 10 in successive seasons since Thomas Enqvist in 1999 and 2000. Both of Soderling's titles (Rotterdam and Paris) came indoors; he was runner-up in three other tournaments (Roland Garros, Båstad and Barcelona).  Soderling reached a career-high rank of No. 4 and earned a career-best $3,731,527 in prize money in 2010. Former French Open finalist Magnus Norman stepped down as Soderling's coach at the end of the year. Soderling started 2011 on a torrid tear, winning 17 of his first 18 matches and claiming titles in three of his first four events (Brisbane, Rotterdam and Marseille). He lost to Nadal in the French Open quarterfinals. Soderling surrendered just 13 games in winning the Båstad title for the second time in three years. His victory over David Ferrer in the final was his final match of 2011 as Soderling was sidelined for the rest of the year suffering from mononucleosis. He also represented Sweden in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
