Melanie Oudin made headlines by upsetting Jelena Jankovic at Wimbledon in 2009. The Georgia native then became a household name in the U.S. with her quarterfinal run at the 2009 U.S. Open at age 17. She upset Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova, and wore yellow and pink Adidas shoes stamped with her trademark word, “Believe.” Oudin finished 2009 ranked No. 49. In June, 2012, Oudin came through qualifying and won eight matches to claim her first career WTA title at Birmingham. Oudin defeated former No. 1 Jankovic, 6-4, 6-2, in the final to become the first woman ranked outside the top 200 to win a main tour title since Kim Clijsters won the 2009 U.S. Open.
