A solid serve and ability to move forward in the court make Elena Vesnina a threat in singles and doubles. Vesnina enjoyed a breakthrough run to the 2011 Charleston final, losing to No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Vesnina claimed the Charleston doubles title along with one at Indian Wells (both with Sania Mirza), a repeat of her 2010 victory there. A four-time major finalist in doubles, Vesnina has been ranked as high as No. 9 in the world in doubles. In singles, she attained her career-high ranking of No. 22 in ’09. Vesnina’s career-best Grand Slam result is a fourth-round appearance at the 2006 Australian Open; she matched that by making the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2009. Vesnina was born in Lvov, Ukraine, and grew up in Sochi, Russia, site of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Her mother introduced her to tennis and her father, Sergej, serves as her coach.
